Castor oil has been used for centuries and continues to be popular for a multitude of purposes cosmetically or medicinally.
Medically, Castor is used both internally and topically. Topically it is known for treating arthritis. Its anti-inflammatory properties make it an ideal massage oil for relieving joint pain, nerve inflammation, sore muscles and recently it is being used as a "castor pack" to help support optimal liver function, improve detoxification (Castor oil is prized for its ricinoleic acid, a compound in castor beans believed to help the body rid itself of excess toxins), hormonal balance and to reduce inflammation in the liver.
Cosmetically it can be applied to the eyebrows and eyelashes to stimulate growth and condition the follicle.
One of castor oil's most traditional uses is to take it internally to stimulate digestion and relieve temporary constipation. Modern research has found that this effect is due again to the oil's high levels of ricinoleic acid, combined with the omega-9 fatty acid that act as a natural laxative.
