Budget Ketovore: Pet Food Tip #3-Ground Turkey, Part 2 Cooking

This blog will tell you how to cook ground turkey the best way to preserve moisture and create a texture the animals enjoy. I use this cooked ground meat (can use ground pork or beef too) for full meals, or as a quick snack when I’m busy and they want a snack. With cats they need to eat every 4 hours, because their bile system is constantly feeding acid into the stomach. If you don’t provide them with food, they will develop stomach upset and begin vomiting.

#1. I begin by taking out some frozen chunks of raw ground turkey out of the freezer (please see Pet Food Tip #2 Storage). I like to take it out the night before and let it thaw overnight for a quick cook-up in the morning, at the same time as I make my lunch for the day (eggs + bacon).

#2. On med/high, I melt 2-3 TBSP of lard, butter or bacon fat in a frying pan. Try to keep the temperature on the low side. You don’t want the oil burning hot or the pan too hot that it scorches the meat. That will dry it out.

#3. Be sure to salt the meat either at cooking time or after. Your animals need good quality salt. As you can see I cook about a pound of meat each go. This lasts about 2 days for 2 cats (one was a pig in its last life). Once the oil is melted plop in your meat and spread it around into a pizza, about an inch thick. This lets it cook in such a way that it retains moisture, like a hamburger, instead of cooking off the moisture, like making scrambled eggs.

#4. When it is just past medium rare (look close, you can see its just a bit pink) take it off the heat, because it will continue to cook as it cools.

#5. Flip it out onto a plate to cool.

#6. When it has cooled down to just warm, using a large knife, cut it ito strips and then turn the plate and cut the strips into cubes. Cubed meat stays moist and is the perfect chunkiness for dogs and cats.

#7. This is Rollo’s favorite meal and snacky (Magnus will eat anything, anytime). The remaining turkey I put into a storage container and into the fridge.

Cheers. Kim
