Budget Ketovore: Pet Food Tip #2-Ground Turkey, Part 1
This blog will tell you how to prepare your ground turkey for convenient storage and continued freshness for your pet’s meals. Many of you will be using the Costco tube of ground turkey, as I use, and this blog will show you how I manage storing that much turkey, but if you just buy a pound, it’s a good idea to freeze what you are not immediately serving. You want your pet’s food to be fresh, when they eat it.
#1. On a cookie sheet, place turkey tube on a piece of pastry paper that is twice the length of the turkey. This extra paper is the top cover wrap of the “turkey frisby” you will be forming. Unwrap your turkey. If using the Costco tube, do this by slicing open the tube on the side.
#2. Unwrap turkey and discard plastic wrap.
#3. Using the top cover wrap portion of your paper, flatten down the tube to a thickness of 2 “. Too thick and it will be difficult to break it into chunks. Don’t flatten out to less than 1” or it won’t keep its freshest in the freezer.
#4. Nice and flat, but not too thin or thick.
#5. Wrap the top cover over the flattened ground turkey and tuck under the edges. Put in the freezer overnight.
#6. The next day take out your turkey frisby and let it sit and thaw a bit for 1 hour. After an hour, peel off the top cover wrap and begin breaking it up into chunks. I make 6x6” and smaller size chunks.
#7. Pop the chunks into a sturdy plastic bag that is freezer safe.
#8. Whenever you want to cook-up some for your pet, just pull out what you need and put it on a plate to thaw and pop the bag back into the freezer. I usually take out meat in the morning, so when I get home it’s ready.
A ground turkey cooking blog to come next week. Cheers. Kim
